Dead as Disco Now Available in Early Access

Dead as Disco, a new action-rhythm game that blends music-driven combat with the tactical depth of the Batman: Arkham series, has launched today in early access on Steam. The release comes at a critical time for fans of the genre, following the uncertainty around the future of Hi-Fi Rush after Tango Gameworks' recent shutdown and revival.

The game, developed by indie studio Neon Plaid Games, promises to deliver a unique fusion of rhythm-based fighting and free-flow combat inspired by Rocksteady's Arkham titles. Early access includes the first four levels and a selection of unlockable characters, with the full version expected within six months.

Expert Reactions and Early Impressions

"It's no secret that Hi-Fi Rush left a massive crater in the action genre," says Lara Chen, senior editor at Indie Game Monthly. "Dead as Disco steps in with its own frantic, beat-synced brawling, and the Arkham-style counter system is a clever twist. It scratches both itches."

Lead designer Marco Velez explained the game's hybrid approach in a press release: "We wanted players to feel the pulse of the music through every punch and dodge, while also strategizing like Batman taking on a room full of thugs. It's chaotic, but it clicks."

Background: The Void Left by Hi-Fi Rush

The action-rhythm genre lost its front-runner when Microsoft shut down Tango Gameworks in May 2024, despite the critical success of Hi-Fi Rush—a game often described as a "perfect 7/10" for its tight integration of music and combat. Though the studio was later rescued by Krafton, no sequel has been announced, leaving fans without a clear successor.

Meanwhile, the Batman: Arkham series has remained dormant since 2015's Arkham Knight, with fans craving its signature free-flow combat system. Dead as Disco merges these two worlds: players rhythmically press buttons to land attacks, build combos, and execute finishing moves, all while staying on beat with a synthwave soundtrack.

Early Access Content and Roadmap

Players jumping in now will find:

  • 4 story missions set across neon-lit nightclubs and rooftops.
  • 3 playable characters, each with unique rhythm timing and special moves.
  • An "Arkham-style" counter system that rewards precise timing with crowd-control attacks.
  • A full difficulty slider to accommodate both rhythm novices and hardcore players.

Neon Plaid Games plans to add two more characters, a boss rush mode, and a city hub area before full 1.0 release. A console version is also in early talks.

"Early access is our chance to tune the beat map and combat flow based on real player data," adds Velez. "We want every punch to feel like it lands on the snare drum."

What This Means for Action Gamers

For players missing Hi-Fi Rush's rhythmic combat or the Batman Arkham series' fluid fighting, Dead as Disco offers a direct answer. While it doesn't have the budget of those AAA titles—at least not yet—the early build shows strong foundational mechanics and a clear love for both source materials.

However, the game faces stiff competition from other rhythm-brawlers like Beat Hazard and AudioSurf, and its success will depend on how well it expands its combat systems during early access. The Arkham connection is also a double-edged sword: some players may find the counter-heavy focus limiting if not balanced with enough original features.

"If Neon Plaid can nail the progression and variety, this could be the go-to action rhythm game until Tango gives us Hi-Fi Rush 2," says Chen. "For the price of entry—$19.99 during early access—it's worth a beat."

Stay tuned for our full review once the game reaches version 1.0.
