Fedora Asahi Remix 44 Launches for Apple Silicon: Drops Custom Graphics Stack, Embraces Upstream Mesa
Breaking: Fedora Asahi Remix 44 Now Available for Apple Silicon Macs
Fedora Asahi Remix 44 has been released, bringing the latest Fedora Linux 44 to Apple Silicon Macs. The update retires the project's custom Mesa and virglrenderer packages, transitioning users to upstream versions from Fedora repositories.

“This release marks a significant step forward in aligning with upstream Fedora, simplifying maintenance and improving long-term stability for Apple Silicon users,” said the Fedora Asahi Special Interest Group (SIG) in a statement.
Users can now install or upgrade to the new version via the official installation guide. Existing systems on Fedora Asahi Remix 42 or 43 must use KDE's Plasma Discover or DNF's System Upgrade command; GNOME Software is not supported for upgrades.
Key Features and Changes
The release features KDE Plasma 6.6 as the flagship desktop experience, with a new Plasma-native setup wizard replacing the previous Calamares installer. Plasma Login Manager becomes the default greeter instead of SDDM on fresh installs.
A GNOME variant is also available, running GNOME 50 and matching Fedora’s desktop offerings. Additionally, Fedora Asahi Remix 44 includes a Fedora Server variant for headless deployments and a Minimal image for advanced users.
The removal of the project's Mesa and virglrenderer packages means users automatically switch to upstream versions provided by Fedora. The transition is seamless for those who haven’t already manually updated.
Background
Fedora Asahi Remix is a collaboration between the Fedora Asahi SIG and the Asahi Linux project, delivering Fedora Linux to Apple Silicon Macs (M1, M2, M3 series). It launched in 2023 and has evolved through versions 42 and 43.
Version 44 integrates Fedora Linux 44’s improvements, including updated software stacks and performance enhancements. The retirement of custom graphics drivers reduces the maintenance burden and aligns the Remix more closely with the broader Fedora ecosystem.

What This Means
For end users, the move to upstream Mesa and virglrenderer means better compatibility with OpenGL and Vulkan applications, as well as faster updates from the Fedora community. The new Plasma Setup wizard simplifies first-boot configuration, making the experience more polished.
For developers and server administrators, the inclusion of a dedicated Fedora Server variant allows headless setups without a desktop environment. The Minimal image gives full flexibility to build custom configurations from scratch.
Existing users should note that upgrades from earlier versions are straightforward via command-line tools, though graphical upgrades through GNOME Software are blocked. The SIG emphasizes that configuration changes only apply to new installations to avoid disrupting current setups.
Installation and Support
New users can follow the official installation guide at the Fedora Asahi Remix website. Existing users should upgrade using DNF or Plasma Discover.
Report any Remix-specific issues via the project tracker. Community support is available through the Discourse forum and Matrix room.
