Breaking: Bartender Pro Launches with 'Top Shelf' Feature

Bartender Pro, the latest upgrade to the popular Mac menu bar management app, launches today with a groundbreaking Top Shelf feature that transforms the MacBook notch into a multifunctional utility center. The update brings clipboard access, file storage, audio controls, and customizable widgets directly to the notch area.

"This is a game-changer for MacBook users," said Ben Gottlieb, developer of Bartender. "We've turned a design element that some saw as a limitation into a powerful productivity tool."

Top Shelf: Notch Becomes a Dynamic Island

Top Shelf expands the notch area when activated, similar to iPhone's Dynamic Island. Users can drag files onto the notch to store them temporarily or send them via AirDrop.

The feature includes a clipboard manager that automatically captures copied content, with options to exclude passwords. Both clipboard and file storage have customizable duration settings.

Widgets for calendar, weather, and music apps like Apple Music or Spotify are built in. A full Now Playing controller lets users control audio without opening separate apps.

System information indicators—volume, display brightness, and battery level—are also displayed. Additionally, Top Shelf offers a Live Activity-like tracking feature for AI agents such as Codex and Claude Code.

When not in use, Top Shelf tucks away seamlessly, mirroring Bartender's familiar behavior. It even works on Macs without a notch, ensuring broad compatibility.

Background: From Menu Bar to Notch Integration

Bartender has long been the go-to tool for taming Mac menu bar clutter, allowing users to hide or organize icons. With Bartender Pro, the developer takes a bold step into notch-centric functionality.

The original Bartender 6 launched last year, focusing on menu bar management. Bartender Pro builds on that foundation by adding the Top Shelf layer, effectively expanding the utility of the notch beyond simple camera housing.

"We listened to feedback from users who wanted more from their notch," Gottlieb added. "Top Shelf is the result of months of development."

What This Means: A New Era for Mac Productivity

Bartender Pro signals a shift in how Mac users can leverage the notch. Previously a static hardware element, the notch now acts as an interactive command center for frequent tasks.

This innovation could inspire other developers to create notch-aware apps, potentially reducing reliance on additional third-party utilities. For professionals, the ability to quickly drag files, check clipboard history, or control music without leaving their workflow is a significant time-saver.

Pricing reflects an optional subscription model: Bartender Pro costs $15 per year, including Bartender 6 and all future updates. Users can still purchase Bartender 6 outright for $20, while the $80 Mega Supporter option grants lifetime access with Bartender Pro included.

The update is available immediately from the Bartender website.
